You wanted to laugh. His rhetoric was asinine. His comparisons were ridiculous. After listening to him, you wanted to spend a few minutes guffawing at Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. Unfortunately, you realize, he may serve on the United Nations Security Council.
Earlier today, the dictator labeled President Bush “the devil” and forecasted America’s decline. His diatribe was both hateful and vitriolic. After witnessing it, I cannot imagine how any world leader could align themselves with Chavez.
Yet, he has friends. Friends he is hoping to parlay into a rotating seat on the international community’s most influential body. If everyone cannot agree that Chavez is a lunatic, one must grant that he is occasionally irrational. Clearly, this trait has no place on the UNSC.
