What They Don’t Understand

Excerpting & Explaining Tuesday’s Presidential Speech:

Five years after our nation was attacked, the terrorist danger remains. We’re a nation at war — and America and her allies are fighting this war with relentless determination across the world. Together with our coalition partners, we’ve removed terrorist sanctuaries, disrupted their finances, killed and captured key operatives, broken up terrorist cells in America and other nations, and stopped new attacks before they’re carried out. We’re on the offense against the terrorists on every battlefront — and we’ll accept nothing less than complete victory.

Now, if revisionist Democrats and Congressman Cleaver had their way, we would accept no victory.  We would have cut and run from Iraq.  We also would be sans several of the tools we are currently utilizing.

In the five years since our nation was attacked, we’ve also learned a great deal about the enemy we face in this war. We’ve learned about them through videos and audio recordings, and letters and statements they’ve posted on websites. We’ve learned about them from captured enemy documents that the terrorists have never meant for us to see.

While some of these documents were acquired from captured terrorists, others were obtained using the Patriot Act.  An act which the Congressman, voted against.

The terrorists who attacked us on September the 11th, 2001, are men without conscience — but they’re not madmen. They kill in the name of a clear and focused ideology, a set of beliefs that are evil, but not insane. These al Qaeda terrorists and those who share their ideology are violent Sunni extremists. They’re driven by a radical and perverted vision of Islam that rejects tolerance, crushes all dissent, and justifies the murder of innocent men, women and children in the pursuit of political power. They hope to establish a violent political utopia across the Middle East, which they call a “Caliphate” — where all would be ruled according to their hateful ideology. Osama bin Laden has called the 9/11 attacks — in his words — “a great step towards the unity of Muslims and establishing the Righteous… [Caliphate].”

This caliphate would be a totalitarian Islamic empire encompassing all current and former Muslim lands, stretching from Europe to North Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. We know this because al Qaeda has told us. About two months ago, the terrorist Zawahiri — he’s al Qaeda’s second in command — declared that al Qaeda intends to impose its rule in “every land that was a home for Islam, from [Spain] to Iraq. He went on to say, “The whole world is an open field for us.”

Iran, Iraq, Syria… an unholy trinity.  This vision is proof that Congressman Cleaver is wrong.  Victory in Iraq is pivotal.  Imagine a free and vibrant symbol between Iran and it’s lackey.

The goal of these Sunni extremists is to remake the entire Muslim world in their radical image. In pursuit of their imperial aims, these extremists say there can be no compromise or dialogue with those they call “infidels” — a category that includes America, the world’s free nations, Jews, and all Muslims who reject their extreme vision of Islam. They reject the possibility of peaceful coexistence with the free world. Again, hear the words of Osama bin Laden earlier this year: “Death is better than living on this Earth with the unbelievers among us.”

Simply stated, we cannot negotiate with terrorists.  This statement spells that out in letters eight feet high.

These violent extremists know that to realize this vision, they must first drive out the main obstacle that stands in their way — the United States of America. According to al Qaeda, their strategy to defeat America has two parts: First, they’re waging a campaign of terror across the world. They’re targeting our forces abroad, hoping that the American people will grow tired of casualties and give up the fight. And they’re targeting America’s financial centers and economic infrastructure at home, hoping to terrorize us and cause our economy to collapse.

This highlights the need for terrorist surveillance and financial tracking.  As to point one, Iraq and Afghanistan are monumental.  In not retreating, as was done in Somalia, we will weaken their resolve.

Despite these strategic setbacks, the enemy will continue to fight freedom’s advance in Iraq, because they understand the stakes in this war. Again, hear the words of bin Laden, in a message to the American people earlier this year. He says: “The war is for you or for us to win. If we win it, it means your defeat and disgrace forever.”

Given this statement, how does retreating sound?

As we continue to fight al Qaeda and these Sunni extremists inspired by their radical ideology, we also face the threat posed by Shia extremists, who are learning from al Qaeda, increasing their assertiveness, and stepping up their threats. Like the vast majority of Sunnis, the vast majority of Shia across the world reject the vision of extremists — and in Iraq, millions of Shia have defied terrorist threats to vote in free elections, and have shown their desire to live in freedom. The Shia extremists want to deny them this right. This Shia strain of Islamic radicalism is just as dangerous, and just as hostile to America, and just as determined to establish its brand of hegemony across the broader Middle East. And the Shia extremists have achieved something that al Qaeda has so far failed to do: In 1979, they took control of a major power, the nation of Iran, subjugating its proud people to a regime of tyranny, and using that nation’s resources to fund the spread of terror and pursue their radical agenda.

Iran?  How is that working out for us?

Just as we must take the words of the Sunni extremists seriously, we must take the words of the Shia extremists seriously. Listen to the words of Hezbollah’s leader, the terrorist Nasrallah, who has declared his hatred of America. He says, “Let the entire world hear me. Our hostility to the Great Satan [America] is absolute… Regardless of how the world has changed after 11 September, Death to America will remain our reverberating and powerful slogan: Death to America.”

Where in this statement is the possibility of negotiation?  I will never forget Congressman Dennis Kucinich requesting a joint summit of Arab and American leaders, what was he hoping accomplish?  When someone opposes so angrily opposes you, how can you change their mind?

The experience of September the 11th made clear, in the long run, the only way to secure our nation is to change the course of the Middle East. So America has committed its influence in the world to advancing freedom and liberty and democracy as the great alternatives to repression and radicalism. (Applause.) We’re taking the side of democratic leaders and moderates and reformers across the Middle East. We strongly support the voices of tolerance and moderation in the Muslim world. We’re standing with Afghanistan’s elected government against al Qaeda and the Taliban remnants that are trying to restore tyranny in that country. We’re standing with Lebanon’s young democracy against the foreign forces that are seeking to undermine the country’s sovereignty and independence. And we’re standing with the leaders of Iraq’s unity government as they work to defeat the enemies of freedom, and chart a more hopeful course for their people. This is why victory is so important in Iraq. By helping freedom succeed in Iraq, we will help America, and the Middle East, and the world become more secure.

Iraq, free and secure, versus Iraq as one third of the unholy trinity… Very easy choice.

Get Us Involved

Three hours ago, I concluded a conversation that made me angry.

The crux of the conversation concerned youth participation in the democratic process.  I was told flatly, “the people of your age group don’t show up.  They will wear a candidate’s t-shirt, they will march in a parade for the candidate, but they will not show up and vote.”

If I may paraphrase a former Nixon aide, “That made me mad.  It made me mad as heck.  It made me God Darn mad by the time I got to the office.”

After reading the previously blogged Kansas City Star article, I was even angrier.  Imagine, someone older actually generating a way for his daughter and her friends to become involved instead of simply denouncing their apathy.

Listen up man; those between eighteen and twenty-five are incredibly busy.  When you were in school, you didn’t have the athletic commitments.  You didn’t have the social and school commitments.  You also didn’t have the internet, video games, or twenty-four communication.  Your days mainly consisted of rising, attending school, and returning home.

I can understand that you are bitter.  However, your disdain for children having what you didn’t or choosing to socialize instead of spending hours at a polling place shouldn’t inspire your judgment.  It should make you want to facilitate their involvement.

I admit it part of this is I love technology.  I grew up with it.  I love to intertwine technology and politics.  But that’s only half.

The other half of the equation is my anger with my party.  We are technologically pathetic.  We are so antiquated and backwards in our thinking it makes me want to puke.  We don’t get it and I don’t know why.  The cellular phone, the computer, the I-Pod…. these are the greatest inventions of the twentieth century.  We don’t use them.  We either find reasons not to or make fun of democrats who do.

I’ve got a message for the person I spoke with this morning and his peers either start finding ways to involve us or shut up when we’re not.  Those great inventions… They could change the democratic process immeasurably, but only if we choose to let them.  Otherwise they are just metal objects that light up.

Getting The Message

Kansas City Star highlights political technology.

The best way to reach April Newby is on her cell phone.

In July, the Shawnee resident sent more than 800 text messages from her phone — on average, more than one an hour.

Her father just happens to be Johnson County’s election commissioner, Brian Newby.

Inspired in part by his daughter, he’s now harnessing such technology in an effort to increase turnout among people under 30 who traditionally don’t vote.

“We want to target people where they live and on their terms,” said Newby, a former Sprint employee who has been the county’s top election official for nearly a year.

Launched about three months ago, the service allows voters to receive electronic notices of election dates, advance voting and polling place changes on their computer, cell phone, iPod or other communication device.

The Most Wonderful Time...

This is my favorite time of year.

There are those who love Christmas, Thanksgiving, or Easter.  However, I love this… the beginning of fall and the intertwining of football and politics.  Please feel free to question my sanity and blame my day job, but there is something different about this time of year.

Every morning, I am excited to wake up.  The air smells different.  The sun feels different.  Again, feel free to whisper about me, but there is something about beautifully colored leaves, a crisp chill in the air, two teams playing before a cheering crowd, and the pressure of a campaign’s conclusion.

Thus, on this season’s eve, I would be remiss if I did not say…  Matt and James, go Irish.  Jeff, go Wolverines.  Courtney, go Gators.  And as for myself… go Buckeyes!

Do You Hear What I Wish I Didn’t?

Can you hear them?

I’ll give you a moment, so you can really listen….

Still can’t hear them?  That’s a shame. I’ve been hearing them since the Pentagon’s press conference this morning.

John Kerry has been clearing his throat.  Russ Feingold has been perfecting his smile.  Ted Kennedy has been practicing “I told you so.”  Each is primping for their weekend interviews, during which they will excoriate the President’s “misguided foreign policy that has spawned Iraq’s civil war.”

Sadly, they are not the only happy Democrats.  While this has not been reported, I would be willing to bet that as soon as the words civil war were uttered, Al Gore and John Murtha broke into a square dance.

Now, I’ll save you a preview of the weekend’s Democratic talking points.  I will also save you their Republican counterparts.  Does the possibility of Iraqi civil war exists?  Yes.  The possibility of civil war exists in every nation.

As an ex reporter, I wish the media would just stop.  I wish they would not report what might happen or what could happen.  I wish they would simply report the facts.  Report the good and bad.  Refrain from analyzing and questioning every pronouncement by everyone with enough time to hold a press conference.

Unfortunately, the media is still talking.  Democrats are still licking their chops.  Iraq is still a fledging Democracy receiving more volume than value.

Say What?

From the Kansas City Star Buzz Blog:

Congressman Emanuel Cleaver said today he’s moving.

His downtown Kansas City office, at the (still) new federal courthouse, draws a paltry number of visitors a month, he told The Star’s editorial board this morning. That’s because of the security wall that makes easy access impossible, not to mention the tough parking situation.

Cleaver’s Independence office draws a steady stream of visitors each week, he said.

When your representative ranks behind three non-voting Congressman, why would you visit or ask for anything?

Meantime, the Democrat said he’s continuing his focus on restoring civility to Congress.

“You won’t hear nastier comments about al-Qaida than you will hear members say about each other,” Cleaver said.

Restoring civility? I knew there was a reason he is so ineffective.

Killing One Person Would Be A Waste of A Bomb

As I reflect on the thwarting of a terrorist attack involving twenty-one Islamic radicals, I remain mindful of the threat that our nation is facing.

It is completely irrelevant what one’s opinion concerning Iraq is.  The aforesaid plot sent the signal that while they may not always be accurate, the Bush administration’s position is correct.  These savage killers cannot be negotiated into peace.  They hate us and they will stop at nothing to cause us unimaginable harm.

If these six years and ultimately eight years have taught us only one useful fact, let it be this… We cannot talk to terrorists.  They don’t know our names, they don’t get personal, and they don’t care.  They don’t wish to speak to one of us; they want to kill dozens or hundreds of us.  Killing one person would be a waste of a bomb.

Cleaver Invites Frank to Kansas City

From the The Source Blog:

Another move in obvious support of the gay rights agenda, Emanuel Cleaver has requested homosexual Congressman Barney Frank to visit Kansas City on his behalf. With recent actions by Cleaver it is obvious that he is attempting to portray himself as the Pro-Gay Agenda Congressman in Washington D.C.

Black Archives Need Support in KC

My wife, Donna, and I attended the public hearing last night at the Gem Theater on the Black Archives hosted by the Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon. We were heartened to hear so many community leaders pledge their support to revitalize the Archives and disappointed our current representative was unable to attend.

A retired archivist speaking on the subject of the difficulties of preservation and the expertise needed to save memorabilia, documents, photographs, artifacts, etc. sparked a discussion between us on the ride home.

The primary concern for us is that all the materials are preserved while discussion moves forward on a community-based solution for a permanent home for the collection. We suggest the Smithsonian be contacted to use their financial muscle to obtain a grant to bring the materials to their preservation center for their preservationists to stop any further deterioration of the collection and to house the material safely until an adequate permanent home can be created in Kansas City.

Such a permanent home will need to address community concerns about access for both researchers and area youth groups from schools and clubs. It will have to have a plan for events to illustrate the importance of maintaining and supporting the Black Archives with donations and volunteer hours. Whatever board is created will need the respect of both the urban community and the business community to ensure long term success for the very important role the Black Archives should be playing in promoting understanding and awareness of African-American history in Kansas City and beyond.

There is now an exciting opportunity to provide a solid foundation for the Black Archives. In my campaign, I will raise awareness in the district of the effort and, if I am elected to be your representative, will work with the Smithsonian and other non-profits to enlist their help in bringing this dream to fruition.

Can Mr. Smith Get to Washington Anymore?

Can Mr. Smith Get to Washington Anymore? is the title of an excellent documentary that follows the campaign of Jeff Smith, a young candidate who ran a primary against Russ Carnahan for Dick Gephardt’s open seat in the shadows of St.Louis. Check out the excellent reviews of this movie and find a theater to view it in near you. At Turk for Congress “We Believe” we have the strategy to send our own Mr Smith, Jacob Turk to Washington DC thank-you-very-much.

Turk Primary Victory

The Turk campaign primary victory of course came with no opposition, but that was a blessing in disguise as we watched contentious primaries take some eyes (and much money) off the November prize. Jacob received a lot of attention from so many leaders during the Primary festivities, as the opportunity to elect ”regular folks” so sorely needed in Congress sunk in. Our message begins to resonate with support from suprising areas of District 5. Seems like Rep. Cleaver “taint good enough” for the expectations constituents had for him as a Congressman. For those who listened to Rush’s show last week, you get the joke!

Now for something not funny at all: Cleaver was ranked 435 out of 438 Representatives (including three non-voting members of Congress who all ranked above Cleaver) by congress.org’s power rankings. Maybe he took the passage from the bible that the “last shall be first” a little too literally. Because District 5 deserves so much better than one of the weakest Representatives in the entire country, but that is sadly who we have.

In fact, they deserve a leader like Jacob Turk. Read more about Jacob’s story here.

God Bless America

Healthcare- “A new face for Malina.” I was watching a documentary about a Haitian girl who was brought to Miami, Florida for a new face. That’s not a missprint- a new face.  Her original face was severely disfigured by fibrous dysplasia. Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the world and the most amazing part of the episode was her family’s gratefulness to God and the United States of America.

We do alot of complaining about our healthcare system, but the fact is American medicine is the best in the world. Our healthcare delivery system is what is facing a crisis. But just to put things in perspective, as her daughter was being rolled into the operating room, they paused for a moment prayer and then as she was rolled away, the women present began singing “God Bless America”. It was a huge reminder of what we have to be thankful for in this nation.

We do have much work to do on healthcare and for a look at Jacob’s solutions check out the Healthcare Issues section of this website.

Turk’s Campaign Guy

So that’s my official title: “campaign guy”. And I love it. More than any campaign, Jacob’s campaign is about people and believing in them. It’s not about titles or lengthy meetings. It’s about a simple concept: elect regular folks to Congress and you can change Washington.

I’ve spent the better part of the last ten years living and working in Washington, DC. It’s a city filled with career politicians sent from all over the country to represent… well sometimes it’s hard to tell who they represent. And that’s the point.

Welcome to the Jacob Turk for Congress Blog

Thanks for dropping in. Our blog will be a way for you to let Jacob Turk know what is on your mind and for him to respond in kind.

We will be using this blog to dessiminate information about our issues and campaign to overcome the advantage our opponent has from special interest money to use traditional media to deliver his message.

We are a grassroots campaign fueled by volunteer campaign workers and that includes our web team. We appreciate your patience as we iron out the website in the coming weeks, adding content including interviews.

We would also appreciate you joining the ‘We Believe…’ campaign to change politics in Washington, DC by electing folks to Congress instead of career politicians. To change Congress, we have to change the type of people we send to DC. We are starting in the 5th District of Missouri with our campaign to replace the incumbent with Jacob Turk. We invite you to read his biography on this website. He has lived his life outside the political arena and shares the frustration felt across America and in this district with the incumbents in Washington.
